Its name suggests otherwise, but the kingfisher cannot withstand freezing temperatures at all. After all, then the water freezes and he can no longer turn up a meal. It also eats insects, but especially fish and crustaceans.
His English name is 'Kingfisher' - perfectly suited to the master angler that he is. Why then do we call him a kingfisher, when he cannot handle ice? It is a corruption of the Germanic name 'Eisenvogel' which means iron bird - and is said to refer to the metallic sheen of its blue feathers.
Like the other birds, this kingfisher is made of weathering steel. This gives it a nice rust layer under the influence of the weather. This protects against further rusting and gives the bird a nice rusty brown color.
