How beautiful that you can look at this beautiful, proud bird every day.
Did you know that in 2016 the Black-tailed Godwit was chosen by the Dutch public as the national bird. But the godwit is having a hard time. Where the farm still leaves room for nature, the godwit thrives.
Nowhere in Europe do so many godwits breed as in the Netherlands. 90% of the godwits in north-west Europe breed in the Netherlands. This makes the Netherlands the most important European godwit country. This also means that if the Netherlands fails to preserve the godwit, the future of this bird species is uncertain.
The black-tailed godwit breeds in open grasslands in the low part of the country. The highest densities occur on moist to wet clay and peat soils, with concentrations in Friesland, the Kop van Overijssel, North Holland north of the North Sea Canal and the Green Heart.
